Yesterday (8/5/24) closed out another .Ai registry expired auction (with a few not closing out until 8/6/24).

Here are the top .ai domain name sales from the 8/5 auction:

aka.ai                    $34,944.00       88            8/6/24 0:23
wow.ai                  $27,166.00       66            8/5/24 15:38
campaign.ai    $14,005.00       153        8/5/24 16:49
particle.ai          $12,950.00       68            8/5/24 18:44
estate.ai              $12,501.00       74            8/5/24 18:14
fc.ai                         $9,989.00          62            8/5/24 18:47
zeal.ai                   $6,800.00          52            8/5/24 16:17
alterego.ai         $6,600.00          83            8/5/24 22:26
amply.ai              $6,433.00          61            8/5/24 18:04
polyglot.ai         $5,625.00          64            8/5/24 22:27

Non of these final numbers is good enough to break the top 15 sales in 2024.

However…non-payment continues to be an issue and really clouds the scene for reporting on the sales.

Notable closings on 8/5 for re-auctioned 7/8 sales demonstrate a huge savings from month-to-month (providing if the new winner pays).

Let’s take a look at a few sales from re-auctioned domain names:

fc.ai       $18,888.00       86            7/8/24 16:52
fc.ai       $9,989.00          62            8/5/24 18:47
Savings of $8,899.00 with the winner paying 47.5% less over time

estate.ai              $31,501.00       108        7/8/24 17:05
estate.ai              $12,501.00       74            8/5/24 18:14
Savings of a whopping $19,000.00 or paying 60% less over time.

But percentage wise, non can compare to the savings of pit.ai:
pit.ai     $17,612.00       139        7/8/24 20:05
pit.ai     $3,413.83          66            8/5/24 23:31
$14,198.00 savings with the current winner paying 80.6% less over time.

In other words, the winner of pit.ai on 8/5/24 only paid about 19% of the hammer price of 7/8/24! Congrats to the new winner!

When you look at the number of bids (after the dollar amount) you can get an idea of how much time was wasted having to bid twice on the same domain name. Lets again look at pit.ai:

139 bids were placed in the 7/8 auction.

A policy of placing bids, which I hate, is IF a bid is placed within the last hour, the hour clock resets. In other words, if someone place a bid at only 10 seconds remaining, the timer gets reset to a full 60 minutes! And that IS happening. And with most only requiring an additional $5.00 bid increment,

Now an auction strategy of outlasting the other bidders is in effect which is annoying – unless you win. And, of course, unless you pay! Many domain auctions I have been involved with do not have an hour reset.

As for the .Ai domain name auctions, I have bid (and bid heavily) in the past two auctions (on many of the top sales) but have walked away with nothing. From a personal level, I do not have the patience to bid on any domain over 10-12 hour span with a 5-buck bid increment – nor will I waste that much time.

Yesterday I bowed out probably around 3:30pm East Coast time. We are expecting quite a few days of drenching rain so I wanted to be sure I got the yard mowed, which is about 2.5-3 acres cleared (but heavily landscaped). This usually takes about 3 hours to mow. When I finished I came back in and logged on to the auction and there were several domain names I had bid on that were still open for bids.

Thankfully I do have an amount per domain I am willing to pay and that limit was still in effect.

I wish the winners well and no ill feelings to outlasting everyone else.

Now Pay Up!

DJI Ban Options

Proposed US Ban on DJI Drones: What You Need to Know

Why is DJI Facing a Ban?

DJI, a leading drone manufacturer, is potentially facing a US ban due to national security concerns. US officials fear DJI drones, equipped with high-resolution cameras and GPS capabilities, could be used for espionage, with data transmitted to the Chinese government. This concern is part of broader scrutiny over Chinese tech companies. Additionally, DJI has been accused of violating US export controls and sanctions by allegedly supplying drones to entities associated with the Chinese military. As a result, the US Department of Commerce has already placed DJI on its Entity List, restricting US companies from exporting technology to DJI without a special license.

Impact on Consumer and Commercial Drones

Consumer Drones:

  • Market Dominance: DJI dominates the consumer drone market with products like the DJI Mavic and Mini series, favored for photography, videography, and recreation.
  • Accessibility: A ban would limit access to these popular drones, forcing consumers to seek alternatives, which may not match DJI’s quality.
  • Existing Owners: Current DJI drone owners might face challenges like lack of software updates, making their drones vulnerable to cyber threats and operational issues.

Commercial Drones:

  • Industry Applications: DJI drones are widely used in agriculture, real estate, and media. A ban would disrupt these operations, compelling companies to find alternative solutions.
  • Economic Impact: Small businesses relying on DJI drones might suffer increased costs and operational disruptions, impacting industries where DJI drones are integral.

When and Where Will the Ban Take Place?

No official date has been set for the ban, but discussions are reportedly advanced. The ban would apply nationwide, affecting both physical and online sales. Federal agencies have already been instructed to stop using DJI drones, and this directive would extend to other entities upon implementation.

The Fate of Existing DJI Drones in the US

For the thousands of DJI drones already in use, several key issues arise:

Software and Firmware Updates:

  • Security: Without regular updates, drones could become vulnerable to cyber attacks and less reliable.
  • Functionality: Missing out on new features and performance enhancements could make drones less competitive.

Repairs and Maintenance:

  • Authorized Repairs: Accessing genuine parts and authorized repair services might become difficult, forcing users to rely on third-party services.
  • Parts Availability: Sourcing specific parts for repairs could become challenging and expensive.

Resale Value:

  • Depreciation: The resale value of DJI drones could drop significantly, affecting owners looking to sell or upgrade their drones.

Conclusion

The potential US ban on DJI drones is a significant development with broad implications for both consumer and commercial markets. While aimed at addressing national security concerns, it could disrupt industries and hobbies reliant on DJI’s advanced technology. Existing DJI drone owners face an uncertain future regarding support and service. As the situation evolves, consumers and businesses must stay informed about alternative solutions and prepare for possible transitions.

Photos: Including images of popular DJI drones like the DJI Mavic 3 Pro, DJI Mini 4 Pro, and commercial drones like the DJI Matrice series can visually represent the impact of the ban. These images can be sourced from official DJI product pages and other reputable tech review sites.
